TALKING CARDS:

  • Purpose: To write and then sort ideas and opinions so each voice is "heard" anonymously-the cards do the "talking."
Process
1.Pass out index cards.
2.Teachers write down a barrier they see to the staff becoming a cohesive unit that works well together.
3.Teachers just write down one idea on the card.
4.Collect and shuffle cards
5.Divide into small groups of 6-10 teachers and evenly distribute a stack of cards to each group.
6.Groups categorize barriers based on theme or topic and prepare to share summary with whole group. For example, they place all cards that speak to the same barrier in one pile and think of a category (such as gossip).
7. Groups choose one category and brainstorm ways that staff can prevent or problem-solve this from happening. For example, if they had a whole group of cards that were written around gossip, they might brainstorm a list of these ideas: speak directly to the person you are having a problem with, if you start to hear someone gossiping about another staff member remove yourself from the conversation, etc...
8. Whole-group share: Each group shares to the whole group.

3 Step Interview:
Three Step Interview
Purpose: To engage in conversation for the purpose of analyzing and synthesizing new information.
Description: The Three Step Interview is a cooperative structure that helps students personalize their learning and listen to and appreciate the ideas and thinking of others. Active listening and paraphrasing by the interviewer develops understanding and empathy for the thinking of the interviewee.
Procedure:
1. Students work in pairs. One is the interviewer, the other is the interviewee. The interviewer listens actively to the comments and thoughts of the interviewee, paraphrasing key points and significant details.
2. Student pairs reverse roles, repeating the interview process.
3. Each pair then joins another pair to form groups of four. Students introduce their pair partner and share what the partner had to say about the topic at hand.
Today at Green: Each group of 4 should write down a consensus statement summarizing their decision or discussion (add to Todaysmeet.com/greenforum as possible)
Then, each group of 4 will meet with another group of 4. One spokeperson from each group will share the team's consensus. The group of 8 can disucss and determine a consensus to share and to post on the backchannel Todaysmeet.com/greenforum
